Case study 4 - Standardising Processes

The Challenge

A major oil and gas company wanted to standardise many of its core processes across its Assets to ensure there was always one best way of working and to enable performance across Assets could be easily compared. It would also make it easier for staff to move between assets and do the same job to the same standard.

Historically, Assets had been allowed to operate independently of each other which had led to each one having different processes with different ways of working. This in turn created inefficiencies and difficulties in benchmarking and with the sharing of information.

What we did

Advice

The advice given in this instance was to:

  • determine the major processes in their organisation
  • create global teams to share information
  • document the ?best-in-class' processes
  • provide implementation programmes and training to the Assets.

Solution

  • Processes were mapped and documented
  • Benchmarking was conducted for each process to determine ?best-in-class' standards and metrics from within and outside the industry
  • Global teams were created for each process and workshops were held
  • Six Sigma methodology was used to determine and document a ?best-in-class' process
  • Process guides and training material was prepared for each process and implementation programmes were developed.

Implementation

  • CBT and workshop training conducted for process mapping
  • Facilitated workshops for eight key processes
  • Developed and documented key ?best-in-class' processes
  • Developed training workshops for ?best-in-class' processes
  • Developed a change management programme
  • Developed training programmes to be rolled out regionally

Results

  • Best-in-class processes implemented across all Assets
  • Standardisation of key processes achieved
  • Benchmarking of Assets enabled
